UA Select Super 16 Recap
The Cape Girardeau Sports Plex is a great venue to host tournaments. Plenty of parking and right of the I55 ramp. It has six courts under one roof with plenty of seating to contain the crowds. It has a restaurant with meals, including salads, so you never have to leave. Keep this place in mind when looking for future events.
Notes from 17U:
Tyreion Jackson (6-0 2017 PG Hammond Morton HS; East Chicago, IN) SYF Players (IN): Here is an unsigned player that needs to be picked up by a JUCO immediately. The fast, smooth and shifty guard can get to the rim and finish with ease. He has a nice stroke on his shot. He is a very smart defender that crashes the boards. An explosive player that lead his team all weekend.
Tyon Grant (6-5 2018 SG F.L. Schlagle HS; Kansas City, KS) Team KC (KS): He is a great one-on-one defender that contest shots. He has good fluid moves that allow him to score easily around the paint The hardest part of going against him is trying to stop him on the break. He does the most damage in the open court.
Daniel Portell (5-11 2018 G Festus HS; Festus, MO) 34 Hoops (MO): Really good ball handler that gets to the basket and can finish. He is a good shooter and defender. His best quality is his leadership. He was seen over the weekend coaching while on the court and cheering teammates from the bench.
Gavin Harris (6-2 2018 PG Jackson HS; Jackson, MO) SEMO Storm (MO): A smart player that runs and controls his team. He is a very good passer. He knocked down three’s when left open and punished other teams from the free-throw line. He plays with a bit of attitude and confidence that can seem unwarranted but he backs it up with his play.
Pete Lake (6-7 2018 G/F Jackson HS; Jackson, MO) SEMO Storm (MO): He has a very good looking outside shot. It looked as if he was not as athletic as the other players early on but then he started showing signs of explosion. His handles were very good and he can play well above the rim. Low majors need to take a look at the hidden gem in Missouri as he already sports a 25 ACT.
Logan Windeler (6-10 2018 F Detroit, MI) Example Sports (IL): The long lanky forward had a nice touch on his shot. He knocked down three’s from the corner, wing and top of the key. His handles were good enough to get him to the rack. He showed that he can exploded and throw some monster slams down. He holds a few low major offers right now and he should have plenty more coming in.
Jaylan Wilson (6-0 2018 G Bay HS; Bay St. Louis, MS) Team Elite Heat (MS): The silent leader. He plays behind the scenes and does all the small things right with his hustle. He was very consistent over the weekend. He has a nice shot. The quarterback has some really nice open court moves and is nice on the break.
Chad Crenshaw (5-5 2018 PG Gulfport HS; Gulfport, MS) Team Elite Heat (MS): The smallest player in 17U used his super speed to navigate around defenders all weekend with some nice ball handling. He came with some heart to defend the bigger guards. He helped set up his teammates with good passes for scoring opportunities.
Derick Hall (6-5 2019 F Gulfport HS; Gulfport, MS) Team Elite Heat (MS): The beastly wide receiver has just a few objectives when he touches the court, rebound and defend. He uses his bulky, hulk like frame to punish defenders when banging against them on defense. As far as rebounding, there was not a ball that come off the glass that didn’t have his hand print on it when he wanted to.
Erik Lahm (6-10 2019 C Lindbergh HS; St. Louis, MO) Arsenal Hoops 2019 (MO): The long, lanky post blocked shots and rebounded all weekend long. His play was solid and steady.
Terrence Hargrove (6-6 2019 G/F East St. Louis HS; East St. Louis, IL) Illinois Hoopville Warriors (IL): The good size guard is a nice ball handler. His shot has a nice look to it even though it wasn’t falling for him. His best attribute over the weekend was his defense. He is a very good on-ball defender that plays defense hard. He was the best shot blocker at the event. He didn’t look the part of a high D1 guy but his potential is unlimited. He could develop into a really nice high major.
Notes from 14U:
Deonte Edwards (6-6 2021 F/C Quachita; Monroe, LA) Team JAH’S Elite (AR): Strong, athletic big. Contest and changes shots. Runs the floor and plays with a high motor. He nearly got a put back dunk this weekend that would’ve shut the game down. Jordan Maxwell (6-2 2021 F Jacksonville; Jacksonville, AR) Team JAH’S Elite (AR): Versatile forward scores after contact down low. Great defender and smart player. Good passer on the break. Works well with the inside/outside game. Could be a top nationally ranked prospect. Camren Hunter (5-11 2021 G Bryant; Bryant, AR) Team JAH’S Elite (AR): Commanding lefty that controls the game.
Erin Outley (6-4 2021 F Parkview HS; Little Rock, AR) Team JAH’S Elite (AR): Great big body with a high motor. He runs hard on both ends of the court. He is a great defender and he rebounds on both ends.
Jevontae Pearson (5-10 2021 PG Nevada HS; Rosston, AR) Team JAH’S Elite (AR): He is a very shifty guard that provides added scoring. He gets to the rim quick and he knocks down shots when needed.
Brandon Huntley-Hatfield (6-7 2021 F Clarksville Academy; Clarksville, TN) Southern Illinois Select (IL): Despite being much taller than the competition, he makes contact and blocks out when going for boards. His ball handling skills are good. He has a nice outside shot. He went 4-4 from the three point line while I was watching him. He scored easily down low. He is on track, with his size and skill, of being a nationally ranked player if he continues to develop.
Kendric Adams (6-2 2022 F/C Trigg County HS; Cadiz, KY) Southern Illinois Select (IL): His hustle was felt on both ends of the court. Defensively, he crashed boards and created havoc all weekend. His offensive hustle might have been more effective. The garbage man not only cleaned up offensive boards but he created a massive amount of points for his team. The second chance points were only a small glimpse of the points he created from setting picks to get the guards open. He not only set the picks but he rolled perfectly and made the best of his scoring opportunities. He was extremely efficient on the offensive end as well. Playing up with the older ages doesn’t seem to bother him with his muscular and taller frame. He could be a very solid D1 guy if he continues to provide his style of play. Adding offensive moves to his arsenal can only make him more dangerous.
